French foreign minister faces sack over Tunisian links
There is growing speculation that France’s beleaguered foreign minister will be sacked this weekend over a series of gaffes concerning Tunisia’s revolt. Michele Alliot-Marie has faced calls to resign after it emerged she holidayed in the country as protests raged. She also offered French military help to put down the rebellion. But she insists she has done nothing wrong. Speaking on French radio she said: “It’s true that for several weeks there have been some controversies, rumours and attacks. but I’ve explained all that. There were no illegal actions, no misdeameanours.” Alliot-Marie is now, however, facing fresh claims that her parents did business with Aziz Melid, an associate of the deposed president. As well as using his jet during their holiday, her parents are alleged to have bought a real estate company from Melid. Despite, Alliot-Marie’s claims that everything was legit, the affair refuses to go away as France struggles to come to terms with the pro-democracy movement sweeping across many of its former colonies. In order to reverse its dramatic drop in the polls ahead of presidential elections, a wide-ranging cabinet reshuffle is expected with former prime minister, and current Defence Minister Alain Juppe, expected to replace Alliot-Marie.
